BBC Media Action in Collaboration With Kannywood.

BBC Media Action is aimed at using the influence of media to support people shape their own lives. In Nigeria for example, the action which includes programs such as Gatanan Gatanku, Mu tattauna, story story, talk your own, is in existence for over a decade. Unfortunately, the action was only able to engage only about thirteen million people which is relatively inadequate. As part of its International development charity, BBC is now keen to work with Kannywood to provide information and stimulate positive changes across northern Nigeria.

Therefore, this year the program seeks to widen its horizon by collaborating with kannywood, Nigeria’s booming Hausa movie industry with arguably more than a hundred million fans and followers across Africa. Kannywood will help in passage of information on mainly Health and Governance related matters by giving 10-20 minutes of film footage as the entire film filmed on such matters is liable to be boring. The footage for instance, will showcase the causes, effect, and action to be taken on some killer diseases like malaria, cholera, Ebola, HIV/Aids etc. Similarly, Governance issues such as the responsibilities of government to its citizens and vice versa would not be left out. General public will be educated on their civil rights such as of speech, expression, right to vote and be voted for, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

On its part, and which is also partly in-line with the above objectives, some quota of kannywood filmmakers which include but not limited to actors, directors, producers, scriptwriters and marketers met after the three day Seminar with BBC, and unanimously agreed to sacrifice a month or two out of their tied schedules to take a tour around northern Nigeria to enlighten people on the coming election and sympathize with them on the prevalent conditions in the country.

Among the participants are; Yakubu Muhammad, Sadiq Sani Sadiq, Adam A. Zango, Ali Nuhu, Rahama Sadau, Hadiza Ali Gabon, Aisha Aliyu Tsamiya, Halima Atete, Rabiu Rikadawa, Aminu Saira, Kamal S. Alkali, Sani Rambo, Ishaq Sidi Ishaq among others.

People are living largely in the dark, terrified and anxious of the present and the future. Well, members of Kannywood have agreed to let out the pent up steam, sensitize people on the forthcoming election and sympathize with fellow citizens over the calamity that took the region by storm.

Defining Moments of 2013

DEFINING MOMENTS 2013
Previous year have come and gone, leaving kannywood with or without certification of the greatest achievement ever in the history of the industry. Stars came in dissimilar shapes and sizes amid novel improvement of characters and characterization, so many new concepts have been introduced to the likings of audience, yet again the industry accounted so many setbacks as a result of meagre or derisory management. On its desire to bring a recap of some defining moments in 2013, Kannywoodscene looks at some foremost events and moments that occurred directly or indirectly to the industry and the people gyrate around it.

Starting with the earliest, it came to our notice that poplar kannywood actress Maryam Booth gave a trial to sing a song in English titled “Destiny”, but people’s reaction and comments was highly discouraging because of its lame nature. People listen to songs to ease some tension or derive some pleasure, definitely Destiny will trouble your mind and torture your heart especially if you have some professional musicians in you music library. Artistes should try and give out what they have not what they don’t.

AMBASSADORSHIP:
In April 2013 the multiple award winning actors Ali Nuhu became the first Kannywood actor to have signed an ambassadorship contract with a mobile company Samsung worth millions of Naira. He also signed another contract as a Centenary Ambassador.

The chairman of Kannywood actors, Ambassador Sani Musa Danja strike a gold as he’s endorsed by Nigeria Academicals Sport Committee (NASCOM) Rhythm and Play as one of their ambassadors. He was decorated by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan alongside Ice Prince, Victor Moses, Joke Silver among others.

AWARDS:
The year 2013 would be remembered for its cluster of awards with so many popular and unpopular categories, every organisation tried to appreciate kannywood for the job well done delivery. This is a clear indication that the industry made a step forward by utilizing the available resource, although if you look at its productions and services you may begin to understand that the industry still need more professionals in every aspect of production. The awards include the followings; City People Awards, Nigeria Entertainment Awards (NEA), Filmbiz Award, Kwankwasiyya Award, Best of Nollywood Awards, MTN/Kannywood Awards and Algaita Awards among others.

Sani Danja and his “twin brother” in business Yakubu Muhammad, a new uprising star actor who made a switch from singing to acting reported to have dominated the City People Award with the categories of Best Actor and Best Producer of the year 2013 goes to Sani Danja and Best Upcoming Actor goes to Yakubu Muhammad, While Malam Aminu Saira emerged as the Best Director 2013.

We have seen Ali Nuhu as best supporting actor in NEA 2013, while in Filmbiz Entrepreneurship Award organised by You Win in collaboration with New Qamar Media; Ali Nuhu, Rahama Hassan, Sani Danja, Adam Zango, Sadiq Sani Sadiq, Aminu Saira, Ali Gumzak, A.S Mai Kwai, Abdulazeez Small, Sani Abubakar were honoured with different awards.

The Kwankwasiyya Award is one of the biggest awards in 2013 in honour of kannywood stars by the present government of Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano State. Adam Zango, Hadiza Muhmmad, Zahraddeen Sani among others won the major categories in acting. While Yasin Auwal, Falau Dorayi, Sadi Sidi Sharifai shine in the award.

MTN/Kannywood award is the first of its kind, therefore; it’s supposed to be exemplary considering the sponsors of the award (MTN), the largest telecommunication company in Africa with Nigeria as its largest market. But among the popular opinion, the awards have been criticized for lack of organisation, presentation, professionalism and justice. You hardly differentiate the award from political gathering or product marketing. Nevertheless, it is a step forward to kannywood industry since MTN/Kannywood awards will be here for the next half decade, I’m sure things are going to get better.

You can’t easily ignore The Algaita Awards as it was organised and held in Niger Republic where the second largest kannywood viewers/fans after Nigeria situated.

NAFISA AND AFMAN;
The most contentious jiffy of 2013 was when AFMAN pendant Nafisa Abdullahi for disputing their summon over organizing a birthday party where many participants dressed “indecently”. The actress mistreated the call made by AFMAN claiming that her tied schedules couldn’t let her attend them. Correspondingly, she claimed that she was not a registered member of the Association, therefore, they have no lawful right to suspend her pro organising a party to celebrate her birthday which is more or less personal.
Astonishingly, after a month or so Nafisa continued with her acting career despite all fumes that AFMAN won’t let filmmakers to cast her in movies, let alone released the movie. This led to so many questions over the credibility of AFMAN. You may begin to ask yourself; Is AFMAN a strong or weak Association? Who shoulders the responsibility of leading AFMAN? Did Nafisa came to the industry with a silver spoon? Must every actor be registered with AFMAN before venturing into acting? Are there any organizations apart from AFMAN? When all these questions threw against an organization like AFMAN, all its pillars would shake and its credibility will diminishes especially when the questions were left unanswered. I was once told by someone from Nollywood that Kannywood industry is progressing, but the major problems are lack of organisation and they don’t speak with one voice. To me if kannywood is organised and speak with a single voice things are going to get better.

CONTROVERSIAL REPOSTS ON NAFISA AND ADAMU:
It has been the subject of debate all through the year 2013 that Adamu and Nafisa are intimate lovers to the extent that pregnancy occurred between the two. In respond to this, all of them (Adamu and Nafisa) spoke in several occasion that none of the story is true. Just that the two are as close as brother and sister. What ruined all their statements was what Nafisa did in Kaduna. She spoke regarding this on one of the social gatherings (party) attended by many people including our reporter where she loudly said: “Ni Adamu bai min ciki ba, duk maganan da ake fada akan mu karyane bai min ciki ba” meaning – “I’m not carrying Adamu’s child, all what you have been hearing is white lie, he didn’t impregnate me”. What kind of nonsense is this? Well of course she defended herself but in another direction she deeply committed herself. It’s not wise to uttered this kind of statement in a social gathering. Believe me, so many people do not believe her, in fact thousands of them consider it as a lie too and I am one of them. In situation like this don’t ever speak to strangers/fans; media is the best way to voice it out if you must speak, not just a party gathering.

SUPER WEDDINGS:
We have witnessed some special weddings of superstars from kannywood industry. Starting with Zaharadeen Sani who reported to have wedded Amina on 28 September 2013. We also have Adam azango and Maryam A. B Yola who stars alongside him in the movie NAS as Amatullah! Likewise the popular kannywood actress and a two times BON Award winner Fati Ladan married to a Human Right Activist Yerima Shettima on 20th December 2013 in Kaduna. We wish them all a happy married life.

Finally, we want to formally extend our hearty condolence to the entire members of FKD production and Kannywood industry as a whole, over the lost of its promising actor and a producer Ibrahim Bashir Nuhu. May his innocent soul rest in eternal peace. Ameen.

This is all we have for now, the recap on the performance of actors and filmmakers will soon be published.

MTN/Kannywood Awards; A Night To Remember

The MTN/Kannywood award night ended around 2am Sunday morning. It was quite a night as most people in the Kannywood industry were deservedly honoured and recognized for their cinematic achievements. It is the first of its kind. New artistic and technical categories were introduced. Some great performance delivered. For so many reasons, a night to remember.

However, the award had so many flaws from start to finish that you couldn’t help but be disappointed at the way the whole event was organized. There were complains after the nominations were released. Instead of the film-makers nominating their movies, it was the organizers who picked and nominated the films for them. Even the nominee lists were released on friday, the day before the award ceremony.

Also the award nomination had the combination of old and the newly released movies. Awards are normally the celebration of cinematic achievements of a given year. This begs the question, which year exactly was MTN/Kannywood awards celebrating? You have to look 3 years or more to find the released date of some of the movies, as if the people nominated with those movies did not deliver a similar or even better performance recently. For example, Nafisa Abdullahi won the best actress for her performance in Ahlul Kitab. Nafisa could have easily won it for her performance in a more recent Lamiraj or Dan Marayan Zaki.

The award took place at Afficient Hall, Nassarawa, GRA, Kano. It’s strictly on invitation. The organizers distributed a gate pass cards with special invitation on them. The cards were supposed to be made available to the actors and invited guests. However, upon arrival, we found the place so crowded you’d think the “special invitation” cards were sold at Kantin Kwari. Security forces from the Nigerian Army and Mopol were beating and humiliating people that I thought we couldn’t get in. It was ridiculous how we had to queue with most of the actors and nominees to get in to the premises of the hall because the organizers failed to provide a more special card or entry for them.

After we went in to the premises, we realised getting in to the award is even more difficult than passing the first gate. The Kaduna State Governor was already there and more politicians were coming in, we knew the security forces wouldn’t be as generous. What was more annoying was how even some of the film makers/actors couldn’t get in. They had to stay with us for more than two hours while the political part of the event was going on. Some of them who tried to get in got beaten and humiliated by the security forces. Isa Bello Ja left the award early with his tattered clothes while trying to get in. Actor Isah Feroz Khan also got injured on his knee and Aminu Mai Dawayya got beaten before he finally went in.

My colleague told me “this is more of a political gathering than an award.” What happened next was so bizarre that it confirmed the assertion. We were still standing at the premises when the chairman of the organizing committee, Hamisu Lamido Iyan-Tama came passing by with a female politician. He was clearly trying to usher her in when he saw Usman Mu’azu- the best film producer in the industry- standing outside with the host of other actors and producers who also couldn’t get in “Ya ku shiga mana” is all he could say and went away without doing anything about it. And just then, someone from the crowd said “wadanda akayi abun domin su ma ba’a damu dasu ba. ” You had to agree with him.

Later we went in to the award hall after the Governor has left. Luckily, only three awards were given, and somehow we managed to know and tweet about them in time. Inside, we found the atmosphere even disorganized. Afficient is a big hall that can contain atleast 1500 people. However, the hall was so crowded the people standing inside almost matched the people sitting at the round tables. The place was well decorated but totally unarranged. No special place was provided for the nominees and actors. The people were just there making noise and hardly concentrating. That was how it went on, with people concentrating only when the award is of enormous interest.

My Thoughts on Dinyar Makaho

Production: ASMASAN PICTURES
Title: Dinyar Makaho
Story: Yusuf Ustaz
Screenplay: Yakubu M. Kumo
Producer : Hannafi Dahiru
Director : Ali Gunzak
Cast: Sadiq Sani Sadiq, Zainab Abdullahi, Rabiu Rikadawa, Ladidi Fagge Fati Washa, Fati Musa (Macijiya) and others.

The movie centred on a venetian blind boy named Ismaeel, whose father is very rich and influential. Despite the fact that he was born with the defy, his parents attempt to find cure for him but couldn’t get any, therefore, they decided to go for the best alternative of making him happy by providing all the necessities of life. This makes him ‘primus entre pares’

Things started getting sturdy when his parents come up with the idea of choosing a wife for him; he declines their choice and later chooses a poor girl with same physical challenge as him, but hers was not born with and when his parent decided to source cure for her he is not in support. Ismaeel believes that having sight is as good as having a lead to all sins.

She has been cured and this makes her a distorted person, she is carried away by the beauties of the world, she became blindfolded with the aesthetic glitters of life which are very limited. Her eyes lead her way to steal, alcoholism and unfaithfulness to her husband who makes her world a better place. He divorces her and she continues until on one fateful day, she is drunk with her boy friend and had an accident that damages her leg and left her one legged. This does not change the fact that Ismaeel’s love for her is superb, giving that he forgives her and reunite as husband and wife.

The movie has a lot of messages among which are: Allah creates human beings with physical challenges for a reason and been free from these challenges is also a challenge to mankind as he shall be ask on how and why he/she makes good or contrary use of it on the day of resurrection.

The presentation of the movie is quite okay, its sequential arrangement is also good, the setting is fair enough, some of the costumes are not bad, the dialogues are well treated and the characters’ performance are outstanding.

The first song of the movie is not too relevant to the tempo of the movie as it has no connection with the characters since they are all blinds. Some costumes of Ismaeel (Jackets and Short knickers) are not fit in view of the fact that we see him as someone who has shown his total submission to Allah, likewise his hair style. We have seen Isma’I’ll just dashing into Farida’s room without saying peace be upon you (Assalamu alaikum) as the teaching of Islam and it is their first night as couples, they seems to have forget the most important obligatory of performing two raka’at (spiritual prayers). Similarly, the last scene has a dialogue/editing error where Isma’I’ll and Farida say and I quote “Ismaeel: Farida ke a ganinki da mai gani da makaho wannene yake da larura a cikin su? Farida: Mai ido mana. Ismaeel: Ko kadan ban yarda ba, ai mai gani shikeda larura…” She said the right answer but his respond goes otherwise.

Base on these facts, the movie deserves a credit and in my opinion I rated it with 6/10.

Aminu Saira- The Undisputed Revolutionist of Kannywood

Few years back and may be still now if you talk of a movie, the first thing that comes to mind is the actors, not the producer, screenwriter or most important of all, the director. We are so consumed with the optimism of watching the movies that we fast-forward the beginning where the crew is being written. Actors take the credit when a movie does well and the blame when it does otherwise. Many people don’t know or forget the fact that movie making is a team work, and for every team to be successful there must be a leader or captain.

Director is the undisputed captain of movie making. He organises the actors, crew, and camera angle amongst other thing. He shapes the story and gives it a meaning, bringing it out like reality.
When you mention the word director to a hollywood follower, the first thing that will come to his mind is James Cameron, who many people consider the best in the world. Watch “Titanic”, “Terminator” or “Avatar” and you will agree with that. In Bollywood we have the legendary Yash Chopra (late) who spent his entire life directing movies in a hit after hit basis (Daar, Dil To Pa Gal Hai, Veer Zaara, Jab Tak Hai Jaan etc) and when you talk of Nollywood there is Andy Amenechi (Royal Palace), Andy Chukwu ( Ripp Off), Tade Ogidan (Dangerous Twins) and more recently Ikechukwu Onyeka.

In our own Kannywood, during it’s early years, very few people knew what a director is or what he even does. Take for example Yakubu Lere’s 1999 blockbuster, Wasila, all the credits went to the actors (Ali Nuhu and Wasila Ismail), without the recognition of the master efforts of Ishaq Sidi Ishaq who directed the movie. Take also Sangaya, the credits all went to Ali Nuhu, Late Hauwa Ali Dodo and Fati Muhammad without recognizing the work of Aminu Muhammad Sabo. Take Mujadala as well, Late Ahmad S Nuhu took all the credits to the extent that people still don’t know the person that directed it (Late Tijjani Ibrahim).

As movie making becomes more and more familiar with Kannywood followers, people are now beginning to appreciate the role of a director, and once you mention that word to any follower of the industry now the first person that comes to his mind is Aminu Saira. He needs no further introduction. He’s the pioneer revolutionist of today’s Kannywood.

At the time when kannywood was at a point of total collapse due to production of senseless movies that only casted many actors singing, dancing and praising themselves, I came across a movie called “Rayuwata” which starred Ali Nuhu and Ibrahim Maishunku. I was so amazed that a movie like that could actually be made in Kannywood at that time. After watching the movie, I made sure I checked who the director was, I saw a strange name called Aminu Saira. I wasn’t optimistic at first because that was how another directorial talent Ashiru Nagoma started before he switched himself to camping and starring hundreds of actors with no particular role in a single movie. I then saw “Almajira” and it was still that Aminu Saira, I started getting optimistic but still not raising my hopes high. Soon the Hiyana scandal erupted and Kannywood became like a dead and buried industry for almost two years.

When the industry was recovering around middle of 2009, I came across a movie called “Garin Mu Da Zafi”, a movie that touched the heart of many Kannywood fans. It was so organized that I couldn’t found a fault in it, guess what? It was still that same name Aminu Saira. Then I became fully optimistic and hopeful that Kannywood would be revolutionalized. Soon came the blockbuster “Jamila Da Jamilu” a movie I have watched more than I could count due to it’s uniqueness, it was Aminu Saira who wrote and directed it, Aminu Saira’s movies were everywhere in the market. People were no longer buying films that were not directed by him.

Aminu Saira had became a household name by 2010 with hits like “Ladidin Baba”, “Mai Gadon Zinare” and his all time favourite “Ga Duhu Ga Haske”, the movie I learnt inspired a non-muslim to convert to Islam. There was no looking back since then, he continued to write and direct hits on daily basis under his production label Saira movies and his friend, Nazifi Asnanic’s Asnanic Movietone.

Aminu saira also ensured the revival of many Kannywood’s production houses that were long forgotten, most notably Abubakar A S Mai Kwai’a TMA production and Umar K/Mazugal’s UK Entertainment. He directed TMA’s “Ina Mijina” and 2011 biggest blockbuster (and in my opinion the best royal movie in Kannywood to date) “Sarauta”. Since then TMA (later Mai Kwai movies) has being one of the biggest production houses in Kannywood based on number of movies produced per year.

Aminu saira did not stop at directing alone, he continue to mentor young and aspiring directors that are today making waves in Kannywood (Ali Gumzak, Kamal S Alkali, Yaseen Auwal, Aminu S Bono) all graduated from his school of directing. Talk of actors? We all know Sadiq Sani Sadiq was introduced to Kannywood by Ali Nuhu but everyone knows he would not have been successful today without the unrivalled opportunities he received by Aminu saira. Same goes to Jamila Nagudu, the lady he casted in almost all his movies (together with Ibrahim Maishunku) between 2009 and 2011. Aminu saira also directed the most expensive Kannywood movie to date “Dan Marayan Zaki” which was shot in many countries and took over seven month to produce. That movie is faultless, the costume, set design, language, everything.

There are many things about Aminu Saira’s directing that distinguished him from many other directors in the industry, he does not direct for financial gain instead he uses passion as a driven force. Aminu Saira does not work on a script that has no good screenplay; he makes sure his scripts are screened by professional writers who know what literature is all about (Ibrahim Birniwa, Yakubu M Kumo, Nasir Gwangwazo). He does not rush to make a movie, I learnt he makes a lot of researches and consult scholars, historians and literary icons before proceeding to shoot. He knows how make a simple story look so unique and dramatized (Watch Fisabilillah), he knows how to solve cases that are prevalent in our society (watch Lamiraj), he knows how to unravel family issues (watch Umarni), the list is endless.

Aminu saira is a revolutionist, an inspirer, a role model and mentor. That’s why he will remain the best director that has come out of many Kannywood for many years.

He is set release a movie DAGA NI SAI KE that is said to be among his distinctive works.

Both situations have serious emotional repercussions. Abbas and Raliya’s world is getting turned upside-down and inside-out. The Whizkid director unfolds the over-the-top emotional saga.
