MTN/Kannywood Awards: A Sense of Deja vu

image

“Awards are normally the celebration of cinematic achievements of a given year.” Writes Aaramz in MTN/Kannywood Awards: A Night To Remember after the flawed 2013 MTN/Kannywood awards. One year and 2 month old, there’s a sense of Deja vu.

To be eligible for nomination in any category, a movie must meet some certain requirements among which the period within which the movie was released. This is significant. Therefore, any movie that goes down or beyond the given year is to be considered invalid or not qualified. To me, so many movies were selected based on sentiment and selfish. Ignoring the ethics of what a credible award means to the career of an actor or filmmaker. If not, why would a movie that was released in 2013 be contesting for 2014 awards?

Let’s say may be a producer is unwise to have registered his movie, but the judges are so injudicious to have nominated it to the finals. The most annoying thing was 2015 movies nominated for 2014 awards. You may begin to ask yourself is the award going to cover only 2014 as said? Or is it 2013 to 2015? What happen to the previous one?

We also noticed that so many filmmakers attempted submitting their 2013 movies but were rejected. Later on, after some reviews and what is call “meeting after meeting” some, of course not all the 2013 movies were not only accepted but nominated. If justice must be done, if fairness must be done, if equity must be done then there are so many “whys?”

Sometimes you wonder why a particular movie is nominated over another, especially when the variance is clear.

Kannywood has the habit submitting old movies to awards. There was a confusion last year about Asma’u Abubakar after BoN nominations were released and nollywoodtweets complained to Kannywoodcene how the old movies were always submitted, thus; the reason for such confusion.

We understand that because some films were not submitted in 2013 and or they were snubbed by the organizers last year, that they decided to allow some people to submit 2013 and 2015 movies this year. This is going to be a serious problem in the future. This trend will be hard to contain in the coming awards, you can’t stop other people doing same next year.

We were told the award for Best Film is to be announced on the night of the awards. The reason is, the movie with the most awards that night is automatically the best film. Ridiculous if that is the criteria for winning the best film. Argo won the 2013 Best Picture in Oscars not because the movie won the most awards. Also, in 2014, Gravity won the most awards, 7 but didn’t win the Best Picture. I don’t know how MTN/Kannywood awards came to that conclusion but it is wrong. Also, nomination for best Film, whether popular or critics award is never upheld until the award night.

It’s hard to tell what a good directing looks a times. Sometimes a film is very technically groundbreaking because of a director’s work even though it’s not the best overall film, it’s in this case you might see a director win without winning best film. Good example is how Ang Lee won Best Director for Life of Pi and Argo won the Best Picture in 2013 Oscars. This rarely happens because Best Director usually ties with Best Film. Of the 86 films that have been awarded Best Picture in Academy awards history, 62 have also been awarded Best Director. If a movie has fantastic direction, it is typically fantastic.
More so, majority of the time a great director will try to avoid having other faults in a movie.

Assuming the Best Film is to come from the list of films nominated under the Best Director, then you’ll have a hard time explaining how Ashabul Kahfi or Sabuwar Sangaya bacame the best film to come out of Kannywood in 2014 – mind the year. I’m yet to watch Sarki Jatau so I’m in no position to say anything about it.

This is only the second MTN/Kannywood awards, so mistakes and inconsistencies are bound to happen. However, it is also very essential that we let them be aware that people notice those huge inconsistencies so that they will be corrected next year.

We hope for an excellent award ceremony come Saturday. But once again, people were left with more questions than answers.
